Microsoft Ditching Live Messenger In Favour Of Skype? [Updated]

Its no secret that Microsoft’s Live Messenger has seen a huge drop in numbers since the launch of social networks have come to town, but sources talking to The Verge are stating that Microsoft will soon ditch the application in favour of Skype.

Even without users it still seems weird for the company to do so, especially with the application linked with the Pages application that comes standard with Windows 8, and Skype is an application that needs to be installed first.

That’s not to say that the Rooms application couldn’t be edited in some way in order to include other Applications like Skype or even Facebook, which has already seen some integration within the new OS.

However the fact that The Verge claims the change will happen next weeks, makes it seem even weirder, with the companies OS and Mobile OS only just launching, it seems weird that they wouldn’t make the change during development.

There’s nothing official just yet, but if we hear anything we will update you.

[Update]

The rumors are correct as confirmed by Microsoft with the following statement:

“We will retire Messenger in all countries worldwide in the first quarter of 2013 (with the exception of mainland China where Messenger will continue to be available).”
